š Poynter Journalism Prizes contest is open
The 2025 Poynter Journalism Prizes is open for entries until February 14. The contest honors work across print, digital, video and audio and includes cash prizes for winners of each category. Submissions for entry can be made here.
š§ The reality of local broadcast mediaās fractured future?
While traditional outlets like newspapers may have some reasons to by optimistic in 2025 as predicted by some, broadcasters may have a tougher time going forward. The argument here is that broadcasters face special challenges such as declining TV viewership and the fact that pivoting to digital may be more disruptive to their operations than other publishers.
š Google pays Canadian outlets $100 million
Google has sent $100 million to nonprofit Canadian Journalism Collective in exchange for a 5 year exemption on the nationās Online News Act. The money will be dispersed to local media companies who can use the funds as needed. The only other company that qualifies to be affected by the new law, Meta, has responded by cutting off access to Canadian news on its platforms.
š¤ Reuters & Gannett partner up to offer bundled content
Reuters and Gannett have teamed up to offer bundled subscriptions that will provide ready to publish content including images, text, and video. The subscriptions will be available in Q1 of 2025 and offer a ācost-effective solution that frees up valuable resources for local news outletsā, combining Reutersā national and international coverage alongside Gannettās 200 local outlets.
